Died in jail or a lockup
Foster Crawford
Foster Crawford was held in the Wichita Falls jail in Texas. On the night of February 19 or 26, 1896, accounts say a mob of 900 to 1,000 men battered down the jail door, took him out, and hanged him from a telephone pole in front of a downtown bank. According to the Pine Bluff Daily Graphic, the officers did not resist, judging it too dangerous to do so. The report also says Crawford pleaded for his life before he died. The two newspaper accounts give different dates for the killing.
