Died in jail or a lockup
Forest Jamison
Forest Jamison, a Black man, was held in the jail at Macon, Mississippi, when a group of prominent white men took him from the sheriff. According to the 1899 Holly Chieftain, the men hanged him from a tree in broad daylight, along with another Black man who had also been taken from the sheriff. The second man's name is not legible in the surviving text, so he is recorded without one. Forest Jamison was killed by a mob after the state had held him in custody.
