Died in jail or a lockup
Foreman
Foreman, a Black man, was held in the jail at Nowata, Oklahoma. On September 29, 1916, a mob took him from the jail, with the sheriff away and the guarding deputies pushed aside, and hanged him from a lamp post near the courthouse. Accounts of the night describe a minister's pleas that briefly halted the crowd before the killing went on. Reports do not agree on how many men the mob took that night, and none of the accounts we found describes what the jailers did in the moments before he was taken.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
