Forbes

died January 6, 1886 · Eureka jail, Eureka

Forbes, a Black man known only by his surname, was held in the Eureka jail. The Greenville Times reports that on the Wednesday night before its January 9, 1886 issue, a mob took him from the jail and hanged him alongside Emmet Keys. The paper presented the killing as a response to the lack of a judge to administer justice through ordinary channels, a framing that is the paper's own.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The Greenville Times reported that a mob took Forbes from the Eureka jail and hanged him.
