Felix Wylie
Felix Wylie was held in the jail at Tiptonville, Tennessee, in July 1881. According to a Memphis Daily Appeal correspondent, a group of men came to the jail on Sunday night, July 24, and demanded that Sheriff Pittman hand him over; the sheriff asked them to wait until the next day, and his appeals held them off that night. On Monday night, July 25, between 8 and 9 o'clock, about 150 men, some masked, took Felix Wylie from the jail and hanged him from a tree, according to the Memphis Daily Appeal and a Louisville Commercial dispatch. Other papers that week reported the same mob and hanging, but they do not say whether the sheriff or jailer resisted the crowd or gave up the keys.
