Faustina G. Gutierrez was held in the Albuquerque jail in New Mexico. According to a Santa Fe dispatch printed in the Helena Weekly Herald, a mob took him from his cell and hanged him at the jail on February 24, 1881. The dispatch is the only account of his death that this memorial draws on.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A Santa Fe, N. M. dispatch says a mob took him from the Albuquerque jail and hanged him.
