Evans
Evans was held in the Dyersburg jail in Tennessee in early February 1869. Newspaper accounts say that in the early hours of February 5 or 6, a party of about 150 disguised, armed men surrounded the jail, disarmed the sheriff and guards, and took the keys. According to the same reports, the men took Evans from the jail and shot him to death. The Dyersburg correspondent of The Appeal in Memphis dated the killing to a Friday night, which differs from the date given in the Neat's State Gazette report.
