Evans was one of five people held in the jail at Dyersburg, Tennessee, when a group of citizens took them from the jail on a Friday night in early February 1869 and shot them to death. The Appeal of Memphis, citing its Dyersburg correspondent, reported that the five were described as horse thieves, though that accusation is not verified here, and that no attempt at disguise was made and nearly all the citizens took part.
