Died in jail or a lockup
Ernest Harrison
Ernest Harrison, a Black man, was one of three men held in the Wickliffe jail in early September 1901. About ten o'clock one night, a group that a newspaper described as friends of a man named Thomas took the three men from the jail, with the jail keys easily obtained, and hanged them from a cross beam. The bodies were still hanging the next morning and were later cut down, and an inquest was held. No account in these sources says whether the jailer resisted the group or handed over the keys.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
