Erin Conway, 43, of Chico, died at the Butte County Jail in Oroville, California, in August 2021. According to the Butte County Sheriff's Office, she had been booked early on a Thursday morning and placed in a sobering cell in the booking area, and deputies and a nurse found her not breathing around 5 p.m. during a routine check. Paramedics were unable to revive her. The sheriff's office described the death as apparently medical, and sheriff's detectives and the district attorney's office were investigating; officials said there was no evidence of suicide or violence. A second record gives a different date of death, August 19, 2021, and lists no cause, so the date remains in dispute.
