Eric Loberg
Eric Loberg was a high-school graduate who had worked in sales and was close to his two daughters, Maria and Erica, even after his schizophrenia began in his 30s. He was held at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles in November 2014, after being placed under a conservator. His family says he was housed in a less secure unit despite his mental health history and a request for mental health housing. Roughly a week after he was placed there, he died after jumping from a height, which a complaint filed in district court describes as suicide. The county approved a $1.7 million settlement with his daughters, and its corrective action plan says steel mesh barriers were installed to prevent jumping.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (neglect alleged). His family's lawsuit says deputies housed him in a less secure unit despite his schizophrenia diagnosis and a request for mental health housing, and attorney Ronald Kaye represented the family.
Reported by: complaint filed in district court; attorney Ronald Kaye (family or their lawyers); case summary provided to the Board of Supervisors.
Lawsuit: His daughters sued Los Angeles County over his death and the county approved a $1.7 million settlement with them.
