Died in jail or a lockup
Eph Grizzard
Eph Grizzard, a Black man, was held in the Nashville jail in Tennessee in April 1892. A mob of several hundred tried to break into the jail one night, and Governor Buchanan came and asked them to leave. The next day, a much larger crowd surrounded the jail and threatened dynamite, and the Hopkinsville Kentuckian reported that the keys were taken from the jailer. The crowd then took Grizzard from the jail and hanged him from a bridge.
