Elson McKanic Jr. was 71 years old and was held at Perry Correctional Institution in Pelzer, South Carolina. The South Carolina Department of Corrections said he had several underlying medical conditions and tested positive for COVID-19 on September 8, 2020. He was hospitalized on September 14 and died at an area hospital on September 25, 2020. The department attributed his death to complications from COVID-19.
