Died in jail or a lockup
Elmo Howard
Elmo Howard, a Black man, was being held in the jail in Pulaski, Tennessee, when a crowd took him from it on an afternoon in early May 1908. The crowd hanged him from the bridge over Richland Creek at the south end of town, and a newspaper account says he was allowed to pray there before he was hanged. According to that account, he died of strangulation after the fall, and the crowd then dispersed quietly.
