Elmer Hill
Elmer Hill was held in the jail at Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky, in December 1908. According to the Adair County News, a mob of thirty or forty men took him from the jail, drove him to the mouth of Greasy Creek in Russell County, and hanged him from a tree on December 16. That paper said the jailer gave up the keys without resisting and that the sheriff was not at the jail. A Danville newspaper account, as reported in another paper, instead said about twenty-six men from Russell County overpowered Sheriff Wright to get him out. The accounts disagree on how the mob got in and on the sheriff's role.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took Elmer Hill from the Monticello jail and hanged him from a tree at Greasy Creek, after the jailer gave up the keys without resisting.
