Elias Chalet
Elias Chalet, 58, worked as a local realtor, and his attorney, Peter Till, said he had recently been allowed to spend weekends with his family in Bloomfield and called him "a decent guy." He became sick at a halfway house in Newark on April 5 and was taken to Northern State Prison, then to St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, a state Department of Corrections hospital, where he died on April 20, 2020. Till said the family was devastated that Elias died alone, and that they believe he died of COVID-19 and are awaiting medical confirmation. The Department of Corrections declined to comment.
