Edwin Ruiz
Edwin Ruiz, 44, died in November 2007 while held at Rikers Island in New York City. According to a State Commission of Correction report, a guard took him to a Rikers clinic at about 10 p.m. on Nov. 4, 2007, because he appeared unwell and seemed to be in pain. Clinic staff reportedly said they could not see him because they were treating emergency patients, and he died about a day later after guards saw him going in and out of consciousness. The report recommended that the city Health Department review why medical staff did not see him.
