Edwin McCulloch
Erwin McCullough was held in the jail at Dallas, Gaston County, North Carolina, in March 1884. The Savannah Morning News reported that a masked mob of about fifty men surrounded the jail late on a Monday night, overpowered the jailer, took him out and hanged him from a tree about half a mile away. The Farmer and Mechanic, citing the Charlotte Observer, reported that the mob held the jailer and took the keys, and that his body was found suspended at daylight. The coroner held an inquest, and because no relatives claimed the body, county authorities buried him near where it was found.
