Edwin Freeman
Edwin Freeman, 45, died on September 6, 2018, at Menard Correctional Center in Randolph County, Illinois, while in the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections. WBEZ Chicago reported that he was on suicide watch and was found unresponsive the morning of his death, then taken to the prison infirmary and on to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Illinois Department of Corrections reported the manner of death as accident, and WBEZ reported the probable cause as intoxication with an unknown substance, the same cause it linked to the death of Kevin Curtis. A man held at the prison wrote that men in nearby cells cried out that they could not breathe while guards did not respond.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (disputed; neglect alleged). The Illinois Department of Corrections reported the death as an accident, while the reporting says he probably died of intoxication with an unknown substance, and a prisoner wrote that guards did not respond when men nearby cried that they could not breathe.
Reported by: Illinois Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); news reporting on the death; a prisoner who wrote about the events.
