Edwin Cordero
Edwin Cordero, 36, died in July 2024 at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, a federal jail, after he was hurt in a brawl there, according to his lawyer, Andrew Dalack. Dalack said the jail was overcrowded, understaffed and neglected. A later report citing court documents from federal prosecutors described a knife fight in which other people held there stabbed him, and said three men had been charged in his killing. The lawyer's account and the court account of how he was hurt do not match. Jail staff were said to have responded to the disturbance but could not save him.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). Federal prosecutors say other inmates stabbed him in a knife fight, while his lawyer, Andrew Dalack, says he was hurt in a brawl and that the overcrowded, understaffed jail neglected him.
Reported by: federal prosecutors, per court documents; Andrew Dalack, his lawyer (family or their lawyers).
