Edward O'Neal
Edward O'Neal, 28, was held at a jail in Covington, Kentucky, and was taken from there to the United States Marshal's office beside the courtroom on December 10, 1885. According to an Associated Press dispatch giving bailiff Day's account, O'Neal was left alone with Day in the office, took a pistol from a drawer, and attacked him. The dispatch says Day took the gun during the struggle and fired, and that the wound through both lungs was necessarily fatal, in the view of doctors. O'Neal died of that gunshot wound.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff. The Associated Press dispatch says bailiff Day shot O'Neal during a struggle after O'Neal attacked him with a pistol from a drawer.
