Edward Harold Schad Jr., 71, was executed by lethal injection at the state prison in Florence, Arizona, on October 9, 2013, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry. He had been on death row for decades and was reported to be the oldest person held there. His pastor, the Reverend Ronald Koplitz, had known him since 1981, kept in touch with him, and described him as a good man. Schad maintained that he did not commit the killing for which he was sentenced, and his pastor said he had told him the same thing. The US Supreme Court denied his final appeals about two hours before the execution.

Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. His pastor said Schad always maintained he did not kill the man whose death led to his case.
