Edward Brown
Edward Brown, a Black man, was executed by hanging at Culpeper, Virginia, on the morning of June 12, 1874, according to a telegram from Culpeper published in the Evening Star. He was taken from the jail in a wagon with his coffin to a scaffold about a mile and a half outside town, guarded by about three hundred mounted men, before a crowd the paper put at three thousand or more. After religious exercises, the rope was cut and he died within a minute, which the telegram attributed to suffocation after he fell. His body was placed in the coffin and buried at the foot of the scaffold.
