Edgar Mitchell
Edgar Mitchell was held in the Boone County jail at Madison, West Virginia, while awaiting action by the county courts. On the early morning of Sunday, January 25, 1903, a mob of about thirty men broke into the jail, overpowered the deputy on guard, took him from his cell and hanged him from a tree in the courthouse yard. One account says the deputy fired shots from a window to raise the alarm before he was subdued and bound. Governor Albert B. White told the Legislature the lynching happened almost within sight of the Capitol and called for new laws against lynching.
