Eddie Richmond

20 years old · died December 15, 2022 · Fountain Correctional Facility, Escambia County, Alabama

Eddie Richmond, 20, was held at Fountain Correctional Facility in Alabama. The Alabama Department of Corrections said he was found unresponsive in his bed by an officer on rounds on December 15, 2022, and was pronounced dead in the facility's healthcare unit, after he had been taken to a hospital in late November for an unspecified ailment. An autopsy report given to his family in September 2023 classified his death as an accident caused by toxicity from fentanyl, fluorofentanyl and another synthetic substance. His mother, Wisteria Richmond, disputes the report's finding that his tongue was undamaged and asks how drugs reached him inside the prison. She said he called the family on December 14, recognized that he was struggling with addiction, and asked to be moved to a different dorm.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (disputed). The autopsy report ruled the death an accident from fentanyl and other drug toxicity, and his mother, Wisteria Richmond, disputes the report's finding that his tongue was undamaged and questions how drugs reached him inside the prison.

Reported by: autopsy report; his mother, Wisteria Richmond (family or their lawyers).
