Ed Sanberg
Ed Sanberg, a Black man, was one of three men held in the Tiptonville jail in Tennessee. According to the Semi-Weekly Herald, on November 25, 1908, a mob that had surrounded the jail all day broke in and took him and two other men out, then hanged them. The newspaper reports that the sheriff and his few guards were not able to hold back the crowd, which had earlier been turned aside by a promise of an immediate trial. The article says the mob gathered again after troops were reported to be on their way, but it gives no account of the sheriff's own actions beyond this.
