Ed Guyton
Ed Guyton, a Black man, was one of five people held in the Carrollton jail in Pickens County, Alabama, in September 1893, while their cases were still pending. Newspaper accounts report that on the night of September 14, 1893, a masked mob overpowered the sheriff, forced him to hand over the cell keys, and fired through the bars, killing Guyton and four others. One report says the sheriff gave up the keys after the mob showed a number of rifles. The accounts differ on how the mob entered the jail, and the date of death appears in some reports but not others.
