Died in jail or a lockup

Ed Collins, a Black man, was held in the jail at Cumming, Georgia. According to Associated Press reports, on September 10, 1912, a mob of several hundred white men stormed the jail, shot him, and hanged his body from a pole in the town square in view of a crowd one account put at more than 2,000. One report says the mob also mutilated his body with a crowbar. The next morning, a store owned by a white man was burned, which the reports attributed to Black residents in retaliation, and they warned that more bloodshed was feared.
