Ed Butler

Ed Butler, a Black man, was held at Fort Smith, Arkansas. A Fort Worth Daily Gazette report from September 1887 said a guard killed him while he was trying to escape. The Grenada Sentinel, citing the account of the executioner George Maledon, reported in November 1887 that a guard killed him during an escape attempt, but it gave no date for the death.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff. Executioner George Maledon says a guard shot him.
