Earl McNeil
Earl McNeil was 40, a Black man whom his family describes as close to them, the man of the hour at family barbecues, who liked to play cards and helped put up gazebos; his aunt raised him after his mother died when he was 12. In May 2018 he walked up to the National City police station asking for help, and officers restrained him and placed him in a police car after he was arrested. National City police said he was rejected for booking, that paramedics were called, and that he hurt himself during the trip, and he died 16 days later, on June 11, 2018. His family says photos show bruises and lacerations they believe came from his custody, and they want the footage and answers, while the autopsy results had not been released.
