Dustyn Henry

died December 15, 2016 · Waterloo Residential Correctional Facility, Black Hawk County, Iowa

Dustyn Henry made good progress at the Waterloo Residential Correctional Facility, a work-release program, and eventually qualified for a less restrictive form of work release before he lost his job. He died by suicide at the facility in December 2016. His estate sued the state of Iowa and a supervising probation and parole officer, saying the officer knew of warning signs and did nothing to reduce the risk before leaving the building. A judge dismissed most of the claims, and the remaining claim was settled for $125,000 in July 2021.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). The estate's lawsuit against Mike Schwab and the state of Iowa says Henry hanged himself with a belt at the Waterloo residential facility and that a supervising officer ignored warning signs before leaving the building; the suit was partly dismissed and the remaining claim settled for $125,000.
