Dunham

died June 26, 1904 · Walthall jail, Webster County

Starling Dunham was held in the jail at Walthall, and early on Sunday, June 26, 1904, a posse of about twenty-five men from Webster County took the sheriff prisoner, obtained the jail keys, and removed him, according to a Columbus Weekly Dispatch account citing eyewitnesses. The Dispatch says the men took him about nine miles to Eupora, where a crowd of several thousand hanged him from a telephone post. The Evening World, reporting two days later, gives a different account: a mob met the sheriff and later the jail, the sheriff and his deputies persuaded them to give up burning him only by promising to hand him over in the morning, and the mob then took him to the public square and hanged him there. Both papers report that he protested his innocence, and the Dispatch adds that he spoke from the gallows and that his body was turned over to friends and relatives for burial.
