Dujuan Armstrong
Dujuan Armstrong, 23, was a father who lived with his mother in Oakland, and his family says he left behind children, relatives and friends. He was held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, California, in June 2018, and died there after deputies placed him in a full-body restraint device called the WRAP. An autopsy by Alameda County Coroner Dr. Michael Ferenc attributed his death to asphyxia, with the restraint, handcuffing and a spit mask cited as contributing factors. Sheriff's officials called the death an accident and the district attorney declined criminal charges, but his family's attorneys say he was inappropriately handled and his mother is seeking answers.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff (disputed). The coroner's autopsy found the WRAP restraint and spit mask increased his risk of asphyxia and ruled the death an accident, while his family's attorneys say staff inappropriately handled him.
Reported by: Alameda County Coroner's autopsy by Dr. Michael Ferenc (medical examiner or coroner); Alameda County sheriff's office and Sheriff's Sgt. Ray Kelly (the agency that held him); his family's attorneys (family or their lawyers).
