Dug Reed
Dug Reed was held in a jail in Cheyenne, Wyoming, when a crowd took him out on June 12, 1879, according to a reprint of a Wyoming account in the Bossier Banner. The account says the crowd gave him the choice of how he would die, then let him place the noose himself, and that he was hanged from a telegraph pole. The Bossier Banner, a reprint in the 1879 paper, presented the killing as a lynching and mocked the idea that a coroner might call it suicide.
