Dudley Brothers
Dudley Brothers was one of three men held in the Vernon jail in Alabama, and he died there on September 12, 1880. The Sedalia Weekly Bazoo reported that a group of armed men demanded the keys from Sheriff Lucy, who refused them, and placed a guard at his door before breaking open the jail door. Shots were heard, and the three men were found dead in their cage. A coroner's jury attributed the deaths to gunshot wounds, and the solicitor questioned witnesses, but no one was identified as responsible. Townspeople made plain coffins, dressed the dead in neat suits and buried them decently.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The coroner's jury was told gunshot wounds caused the deaths, and no one was identified as responsible.
Reported by: Coroner W. T. Marler's jury (medical examiner or coroner).
