Drew Planten, 35, died at Central Prison in Raleigh while awaiting trial. According to attorney Kirk Osborn, a preliminary autopsy found that he hanged himself with the hem of a bed sheet and may have put a plastic bag over his head. Prison officials said he had come off suicide precautions on Oct. 30 after a mental health team review. His mother, Sarah Chandler, said she was very concerned about his well-being in the weeks before his death, and that the prison did not do enough to prevent it.
