Dr. G. W. Darden
Dr. George W. Darden was a physician and a wealthy, respected citizen of Warren County, Georgia, and according to one account he was killed in front of his wife and children. He was held in the local jail at Warrenton in early March 1869. An Augusta dispatch printed in the Worcester Daily Spy says about a hundred men in disguise took over the town, and that the sheriff refused to hand over the jail keys and left. The dispatch says the mob returned at midnight, broke into the jail, smoked him out with a fire at the doorway, and shot him after he was allowed time to make a will. This is a secondhand newspaper account, and its details have not been independently verified.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A Klan band broke into the Warrenton, Georgia jail, smoked Darden out with a fire at the door and shot him, according to Atlanta and Augusta dispatches reprinted in the Worcester Daily Spy and the Evening Argus; the sheriff refused to give up the keys and left.
