Doraine Stangel
Doraine Stangel, 48, died in August 2024 at the Jefferson County Jail in Colorado, days after entering the jail in early August. Her daughter, Felicia Paz, described her mother as a single mom with a big heart who put other people first and was working to recover from substance use disorder. Paz says a porter reported that Stangel was screaming for help and water and never got into detox protocol or out of a booking cell. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said every in-custody death undergoes an independent investigation by its Critical Incident Response Team. A later lawsuit filed by attorney Anita Springsteen links her death to two other deaths at the jail since December 2023.
Cause of death, as reported: Cause not yet determined (neglect alleged). Her daughter, Felicia Paz, says a porter reported that Stangel was screaming for help and water and was never moved into detox protocol or out of a booking cell.
Lawsuit: Her family's attorney, Anita Springsteen, filed a lawsuit over Doraine Stangel's death at the Jefferson County Jail, and no payment amount has been reported.
