Donald Winnie
Donald Winnie was held at the Earnest C. Brooks Correctional Facility in Muskegon, Michigan, when his cellmate attacked him as he slept in early October 2013, according to prosecutors and state police testimony. He was taken to a hospital and kept on life support for five days, and died on October 11, 2013. Testimony at the preliminary examination described the cellmate's repeated requests that the two men be separated before the attack. The cellmate later pleaded no contest to first-degree murder in February 2014.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). Michigan State Police Detective Greg Poulson testified that Winnie's cellmate bludgeoned and stabbed him, and prosecutors say the cellmate attacked him while he slept; testimony also says the cellmate repeatedly asked that the two men be separated.
Reported by: Michigan State Police (outside investigators); prosecutors.
