Executed
Dominique Ray
Dominique Ray was Muslim, and he asked that an imam be present with him in the execution chamber. Alabama's execution protocol allowed only the prison chaplain to attend, and Ray was executed on February 2, 2019 without an imam. The Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals had granted a stay of his execution, and the U.S. Supreme Court lifted that stay, allowing the execution to proceed.
Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. His lawyers objected that Alabama's protocol barred his requested imam from the execution chamber, but the U.S. Supreme Court lifted a stay the Eleventh Circuit had granted.
