Domineque Ray

died July 2, 2019 · Holman Correctional Facility, Escambia County, Alabama

Domineque Ray was a devout Muslim who had met for years with Imam Yusef Maisonet, who ministers to incarcerated people in Alabama, and Maisonet said he wanted to be present so that Ray's last words would confirm his faith. Ray was executed by the State of Alabama at Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore on February 7, 2019, after the U.S. Supreme Court vacated a stay, with four justices dissenting. His lawyers argued that he was denied an imam in the execution chamber and that key evidence and mitigation about his difficult childhood, marked by abuse and instability, were not presented. The Alabama Department of Corrections records the death as an execution.

Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. His lawyers argued he was denied an imam in the execution chamber and that key evidence and mitigation about his life were not presented.

Reported by: Alabama Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); his lawyers.
