Died in jail or a lockup
Doc Posey
Doc Posey was held in the Whitfield County jail in Dalton, Georgia. In the early morning of July 1, 1907, newspaper accounts say a crowd of about twenty-five men went to the jail, covered the officials with guns, and took him. The crowd hanged him from a railroad viaduct in the middle of the city, and his body was found there at daylight. Accounts differ on how the jailer acted: one says a mob overpowered him and took his keys, while others say several policemen were forced to accompany the crowd and no shots were fired.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody
