Dina Kirven

26 years old · died April 8, 2023 · Oklahoma County Detention Center, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma

Dina Kirven, 26, was found unresponsive in a holding cell in the booking area of the Oklahoma County Detention Center early on April 8, 2023, hours after he was booked. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. His mother, Volarie Scott, says he loved to laugh, had a big heart, went to church, and that he was trying to fight his demons. The medical examiner found he died of a fentanyl overdose, and Scott's lawsuit against the county and a doctor who released him to police says no one checked on him while he was in the cell. Scott also says jail staff left him unattended for more than six hours and that the jail does not have enough staff; the jail said it could not comment because the death is under investigation.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (disputed; neglect alleged). The medical examiner found a fentanyl overdose, but his mother's lawsuit against the county and a doctor says no one checked on him, and she says jail staff left him unattended for more than six hours and that two pod officers were fired for negligence.

Reported by: medical examiner or coroner; his mother, Volarie Scott, and her lawsuit (family or their lawyers).
