Didier Carias
Didier Carias, 29, had long suffered from schizophrenia and paranoia, his parents said, and when he was taking his medication they remember a happy young man who loved church, hip hop music, and time with his brother and 6-year-old nephew. He was held at Piedmont Correctional Institution in Salisbury, North Carolina, where his parents said he was placed in solitary confinement 32 days after arriving and could not speak with his family. The North Carolina Department of Public Safety said staff found him in his cell on September 26, 2022, and that the death appears to be a suicide. His parents question why someone with such severe psychological problems was placed in solitary confinement.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). The Department of Public Safety says the death appears to be a suicide, while his parents say he had long suffered from schizophrenia and paranoia and question why he was placed in solitary confinement, a placement they say left him unable to talk with family.
Reported by: North Carolina Department of Public Safety (the agency that held him); his parents.
