Dexter Freeman, 38, died on February 8, 2021, while held at St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville, Alabama. The Alabama Department of Corrections said his injuries were believed to have come from an assault by another person held there, and that an autopsy was pending. Equal Justice Initiative reported that he was stabbed to death in a housing unit where other homicides and stabbings had occurred over the previous year, and it links his death to a series of prison homicides it attributes to documented mismanagement, a claim the department has not addressed in these reports. No suspects had been identified in the department's account.
