Devauntae Daye
Devauntae Daye died on August 30, 2020, in a cell at the Cuyahoga County Jail in Ohio, where a corrections officer found him unresponsive. The medical examiner's autopsy found a fentanyl overdose, and the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office and Sheriff's Office said another person held in the same cell supplied the drugs. State inspectors said the death was accidental and that the cell was overcrowded, and they found that cell checks were done too quickly for staff to observe people's condition. Whether the drugs were smuggled into the jail and how the checks were carried out remain points of dispute in the accounts.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (neglect alleged). State inspectors ruled the death an accidental overdose and said staff did cell checks too quickly to tell whether people were alive.
Reported by: state inspectors; Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department (the agency that held him); Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office (medical examiner or coroner); Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office.
