Desiree Gonzales
Desiree Gonzales was 17. Her father, Waldo Anaya, said she was young and that everybody makes mistakes, and the family set up a fund to help with funeral expenses. Police say she died of a heroin overdose in May 2014 after she was taken to a juvenile detention center in Santa Fe, where officers said she seemed out of it and was having trouble breathing. Her father says she was released from the hospital less than two hours after treatment and before she was taken into custody. About three hours after booking she was found unresponsive and taken back to the hospital, where she died, and the medical examiner is investigating the death while police look into a possible bad batch of heroin.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (neglect alleged). Police say she had overdosed on heroin and seemed out of it and short of breath when booked, but her father says she was released from the hospital less than two hours after treatment, and the medical examiner is still investigating.
Reported by: Santa Fe Police Department (the agency that held her). The only account of how this person died comes from the agency that held her.
