Desarae Godsey
Desarae Godsey was a 20-year-old woman whose mother, Amy Shumate, described her as bubbly, always smiling and a good kid. Godsey died in February 2024 after being found unresponsive in her cell at Southern Regional Jail in Raleigh County, West Virginia, where she was held. Her mother said hospital staff told her that Godsey had no drugs in her system but had suffered two heart attacks. The state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the West Virginia State Police are investigating, and Godsey's organ donations saved three lives.
