Derrek Leeds, 43, of San Rafael, was a man held at the Marin County Jail. The Marin County Sheriff's Office said a deputy found him in need of medical care during a cell check at about 2:09 a.m. on May 30, 2024, and he was pronounced dead at 2:42 a.m. The San Rafael Police Department will conduct an independent investigation, and the Sonoma County coroner's unit will perform the autopsy. His death was the fourth in-custody death since August, which has renewed concern among activists calling for a civilian sheriff's oversight commission.
