Derek Valentine, 31, died on April 20, 2023, while held at the John Latorraca Correctional Center in Merced, California. The Merced County Sheriff's Office said correctional staff found him unresponsive at about 9:50 p.m. The sheriff's Investigations Bureau is investigating the death, and no cause has been announced.
